In September 2018, Amika was invited to receive the Campaign Award for FreePeriods in a ceremony in New York hosted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
What is Goalkeepers?
In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development to achieve a better world by 2030.
Started by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation three years ago, Goalkeepers is a catalyst for action toward these goals—bringing together leaders from around the world to accelerate progress toward ending poverty and fighting inequality. Speakers have included world leaders President Barack Obama, President Emmanuel Macron, Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and young leaders such as Malala Yousafzai and Nobel Prize winner, Nadia Murad.
As one of the three award winners, Amika addressed an audience of over 300 people to speak about why global period poverty is harming the educational and economic progression of women and girls worldwide. She called for an end to the shame and stigma, and made an urgent appeal to all international governments to prioritise menstrual hygiene, allowing girls to continue their education and be their very best.
